Dear Paperhouse friends,
Following the new reopening plan in Ontario, we have updated our COVID-19 procedures accordingly. For a full list of new public health measures please consult the Reopening Ontario, Roadmap to Reopen.
Paperhouse has updated our guidelines to reflect these changes and to do our part in limiting community transmissions. Please review the adjusted guidelines here. As of June 17th, we have decided to move into Step 1.
Step 1,
June 17, 2021 at 12:01 a.m.*
1 person / 1 household in-studio maximum
Key-holding members only
No guests / visitors allowed*
Limited bulk booking of studio time—you cannot book more than 10 days of studio time at once.
Group/private classes, events, and programming prohibited.
Health screening required.
Overlaps of members permitted for required studio-specific activities, e.g.picking up work, putting supplies away. Maximum overlap time is 30 minutes.
Masks required when more than one person of different households are in the space
Maintain safe social distance
*During “Lockdown”, “Step 1”, and “Step 2” access to the studio is very limited. It is recommended to not have guests or visitors booked during this time to ensure members’ access to the studio is maximized, unless it is absolutely necessary to your practice. During “Step 2” you can book a guest to come in if it is required, e.g. a gallery / dealer / client visit, studio assistance, etc. We ask that you keep these visits at a minimum—both number of days and duration of the visit. During “Lockdown” and ”Step 1” all guests / visitors are prohibited, if you require studio assistance we recommend asking someone from your household or bubble. The exception to this is if you require specific access needs, e.g. an attendant, personal care worker, or studio assistance due to a disability. We aim to remain flexible and creative in ensuring all members can still produce their artwork during these challenging times, while balancing health and safety for the Paperhouse community and our extended friends and families. We will work with each member to ensure your access to our studio is as comfortable and safe as possible.
* Projected timelines of moving into Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3 are determined by a number of factors as outlined by the province, please review them here “Reopening Ontario”. Paperhouse also reserves the right to adjust the timeline according to our collective’s comfort and assessment.
All members and staff are required to fill in Artscape Youngplace’s Health Screening form upon entry. Please forward proof of form submission (sent to your email used) / “Questionnaire Results” to info@paperhousestudio.com, this allows us to do our part in tracking for both the studio and AYP.
With warmth,

June, 10, 2020
Dear Paperhouse friends,
As the city starts to re-open, we continue to work hard here at Paperhouse to figure out what are the best steps to take. For the next few weeks, until June 30th, we have decided to start our re-opening phase, please see the below steps put in place:
1. We will only re-open for Paperhouse members (including staff) with prior approved access including issued keys to both the studio and the building itself.
2. We ask that all members interested in accessing the space as renters abide by health and safety measures put forth by the city health advisors–e.g.please wash your hands once arriving the space and anytime you leave the studio and return, regularly disinfect the surfaces with our cleaners including handles and commonly touched areas, and do not come into the studio if you are feeling unwell.
3. Members are not allowed to bring in guests unless absolutely necessary for the process and/or has been discussed with Paperhouse staff prior. This will be assessed case-by-case and Paperhouse has the right to deny entry of a guest, for the protection of the wider Paperhouse community’s health and safety.
4. Only one member is allowed at a time, each member must book in their slot on our Google calendar. Training will be provided for any key-holding members who are unfamiliar with using this app. Availability is by first come, first seve, however if there is an urgent need, please get in touch directly and we will do our best to accommodate in discussion with members. Exceptions for overlapping members will be made for pick-ups / drop-offs of any materials or other items. Masks will be required if there are overlaps.
All membership requests, including further information, should be directed to members[at]paperhousestudio[dot]com.
Custom Artist Projects & Commissions
We are taking select custom artist projects, dependent on scope of the project, this is again case-by-case. Please get in touch with info[at]paperhousestudio[dot]com if you interested and require more information.
Workshops
Currently, all in-studio workshops are postponed to August. We remain hopeful but uncertain if we will be able to run these classes due to the current trajectory. We will update you as we progress. However, we are currently working on a virtual bookbinding series and will be issuing this schedule in the next few weeks. We will announce this via our newsletter and on social media. These series are a great way to remain engaged and creating at a safe distance, so we hope you will be able to join us!
Next steps
We are paying attention to city health advisors to determine the safest way to reopen our space to the public. We know it will be a slow reopen as our priority is the health and wellness of our staff, members, and out extended communities. Here are the factors that will determine and contribute to our decisions:
Toronto City health advisors on reopening to the public including gatherings and events larger than 5 people.
Artscape’s decision and leadership to reopen the building–currently the entire Youngplace is closed to the public until further notice.
Looking to similar studio organizations and collectives across Toronto and Ontario to consult upon reopening and operational health and safety strategies and guidelines.
We thank you all for your patience and support during these challenging times. We welcome any feedback and suggestions, so feel free to get in touch.
We miss you all very much and look forward to welcoming you back into Paperhouse!
Flora & Emily,
Co-directors, Paperhouse Studio
March 16, 2020
Hello everyone,
Like many of you, we at Paperhouse have been closely monitoring local and global developments with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic. After careful consideration we have decided to temporarily close to the public. This difficult decision is made in accordance with Toronto Public Health advisories with the intent to help mitigate the spread of the virus during this critical window of opportunity. We recognize the situation is changing rapidly and will continue to do our best to respond with care for all. Our priority has always been and will continue to be the health and wellness of our community members and larger global community.
In response to this situation we have decided to do the following:
• 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻. All communication will be moved online or by phone. Please email us first to set up times as we may be working remotely and thus unable to answer the studio phone.
• 𝗪𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝗽𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹. We have tentatively scheduled classes for June, July, and August but we will keep apprised of the situation and healthcare recommendations, adapting this decision accordingly.
◦ 𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘱 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴. We will be transferring your registration into a replacement class so that we can reserve your spot. We will work with you one-on-one to ensure this fits with your schedule and commitments.
◦ 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰, 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘴𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘨𝘪𝘧𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘥. This will help Paperhouse Studio absorb the shock of lost income. We understand that not everyone will be able to do so, please do get in touch and let us know. We will absolutely work something else out with you.
𝗜𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀, 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁-𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁. We are reaching out to our community for support as we navigate these difficult next few weeks.
