Artist’s books and zines combine visual arts with the craft of bookbinding, as either single works of art, or in multiples. In this class we will explore the variety of unique qualities that books and zines can offer as a creative medium both aesthetically and conceptually, and their ability to create an intimate, one-on-one experience with the reader by displaying artwork that is personal, interactive, concept-based, abstract, or figurative.
On this course you will develop a base of skills in bookbinding, formatting, and layout creation, that can be integrated with your individual artistic background. Any art discipline can be integrated with a book format — painters, photographers, writers, collagers — all are welcome!
In the first class we will look at artist’s books, learn about bookbinding tools, and discover how to layout and impose images in preparation for printing. We will then put together a zine in class, print it with the studio’s Risograph printer, and bind it by hand.
Between classes you will be to able work on your own book idea, and then bring materials or stencils to be printed or bound in our second class. The instructor will help you put your zine together, and offer technical suggestions in designing, printing, and binding.
You will leave with a model of your art book project and the knowledge needed to edition your project, as well as a resource booklet that will contain a summary of what we learned in class, a reading list, and some resources that you might find helpful for further study.
