Sculptural Papermaking is an intermediate class that builds upon the foundation of beginner papermaking and introduces the exploration of paper as a form and not just a substrate. Paper’s sculptural properties are some of our favourite things about the medium. In this class we explore the surprising lightness and toughness of paper through experiments with different techniques and paper fibres, in particular cotton and abaca and flax. We will show multiple techniques such as casting into a mould or over a form on a vacuum table, and tamping over soft objects and creating sculptural effects using the shrinking properties of paper. Students will leave with a collection of samples and handmade sculptural objects.
